Aydın LGBTİ+ Solidarity brought together artists from different backgrounds “Tuhaflıklar Furyası” (Oddities) online exhibition.
The online exhibition, featuring works of literature, music, painting, illustration and photography; opened on 14 June.
The exhibition organized by Aydın LGBTİ+ Solidarity is promoted as follows:
“The word queer, meaning “weird” in history; has been used as a slur against non-heterosexuals throughout the 20th century. In 1990, this term was embraced by activists in the United States and acquired a political identity, and in its ‘Queers Read This!’ brochure distributed at the Pride Parade in New York that same year, Queer Nation explained this ownership as follows: “Using the word “queer” is important as it reminds us how we are perceived by the rest of the world. Queer is a mischievous, ironic weapon that we can take from homophobia and use it against it.” Queer theory reveals itself not with what it is but what it is against. “Normal”, questions the establishment and functioning structure of the norms that establish the normality. This theory derives most fundamentally from postmodernism and contemporary feminist philosophy, from the historical and social fictionalist ideas of Michel Foucault. We express and honor our suppressed and invisible identities with our “Tuhaflıklar Furyası, our queer art exhibition, which is an uprising of individuals whose social stances are unwanted in society.
